Susceptible, but Treatable

Shoulder

The shoulder is prone to injuries, osteoarthritis, or impingement syndrome. Typical symptoms include pain and restricted mobility. Physiotherapy often provides relief, while in more severe cases, surgery may be required.

The Special Features of the Shoulder Joint

The shoulder is an extremely complex joint, whose stability is not provided by bone but by the fine interaction of capsules, ligaments, and muscles. This structure makes the shoulder highly mobile, but also particularly susceptible to injuries and overuse.

Common Conditions:

  • Osteoarthritis: Over time, mobility decreases and pain develops, initially during activity and later also at rest.

  • Cervical Spine Tension: Compensatory postures can lead to problems in the cervical spine.

  • Impingement Syndrome: A narrowing within the shoulder joint causes painful movement restrictions.

Treatment Options:

  • Conservative Therapy: Physiotherapy and pain medication often help to keep symptoms under control.

  • Surgical Procedures:

    • Arthroscopy: Gentle removal of damaged joint surfaces, e.g. in cases of acromioclavicular joint arthritis.

    • Joint Replacement: In advanced cases, an artificial joint may be implanted, similar to hip or knee arthroplasty.
